Executive Director Position –

Lutheran Outdoor Ministries ASSOCIATION

of Kansas                                 

The Executive Director provides management and oversight of all Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Association of Kansas (LOMAK) programs and operations.  As Chief Executive Officer, the Executive Director provides leadership and is responsible for carrying out and expanding the vision and mission of the organization.  The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors, and is responsible for the hiring, supervision, and evaluation of all staff.  In addition to serving as CEO, the Executive Director will also serve as the primary development and communications staff member for the organization. Qualifications and experience

  • Personal commitment to Christian faith and faith formation, plus understanding of and experience in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and its teachings are required. Must be a member of an ELCA congregation or become one in a reasonable amount of time following employment.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, masters degree and/or Lutheran seminary training preferred.  Evidence of education or significant experience in specific areas relevant to LOMAK programs and operations, i.e., business and accounting, human resources, education and program development is desirable.
  • At least five years experience in camping, education, the church or other not-for-profit agency or association, or relevant business experience required.  Strong experience in Lutheran outdoor ministries preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in budget development and financial management required. 
  •  Demonstrated experience in raising private funds, including annual funds and major gifts, required.  Experience in capital campaigns desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing personnel, including hiring and evaluation, training and motivation, and conflict resolution is required.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and spoken, including the ability to represent LOMAK before diverse audiences, required.  Experience in marketing and public relations is desirable.

Responsibilities & Expectations

  •  Oversee the sound administration of LOMAK programs and operations, including:
  • Spiritual leadership;
  •  Financial management, budget preparation, resource development and risk management;
  •  Leadership development;
  •  Program development and implementation;
  •  Marketing and communications;
  •  Youth Camping and Retreat & Conference facilities management, including food service, maintenance, and safety;
  • Environmental and ecological stewardship; and
  • Serve as an example by giving generously to the ministry.
  •  Develop, implement and provide for the evaluation of a comprehensive and ongoing fundraising program that supports LOMAK’s needs and one that provides opportunities for individuals and organizations to give and participate in the mission of LOMAK.
  •  Work closely with the Board of Directors and committees.  Provide board members timely and complete reporting and advise and present to them ideas and solutions for challenges and opportunities facing LOMAK.
  •  Support the mission and ministry of the ELCA and work effectively within church structures and with church-related agencies and institutions. Ensure LOMAK’s active participation within the ministry of the Central States Synod.
  •  Serve as liaison to congregations, agencies and individuals, and represent LOMAK before diverse audiences in person and in writing. 
  •  Travel throughout the service area as necessary.
  • Lead staff in developing, implementing and evaluating creative, faith-building programs for diverse audiences in varying and innovative formats.
  • Provide for the orderly, efficient and cost-effective conduct of necessary business and support operations including, but not limited to, accounting, registration, gift processing, purchasing, risk management, human resources, and payroll.
  • Create and maintain an overall atmosphere of hospitality, acceptance, and nurture for children, families and adults.
  • Lead the discernment and development of a strong vision for the ministry of LOMAK, its activities and possibilities.
  • Participate in continuing education in a variety of national camping and leadership opportunities.
  • Abide by the standards, practices and principles of the American Camp Association and the Association of Lutheran Development Executives.
  • Accreditation standards and government regulations.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, BLUE LAKE UNITED METHODIST ASSEMBLY, ALABAMA
